The cyber attack announced yesterday is only successful against organisations that have not applied existing software updates — and the main vulnerability exploited has been known about for over a year.

That audit found that the Treasury, the National Archives and Geoscience Australia all had "low levels of effectiveness … in managing cyber risks".Of the previous three audits of 11 government entities, it said it had found "high rates of non-compliance".

An AFP spokesman said the audit was more than four years old and their "ICT systems are now more resilient to malicious cyber activity". Professor Medcalf said there has been an attitude in some government agencies and private businesses thought cyber security was the job of the ASD.
